Medical Disclaimer

About this translation. This page is an English translation of maru's Japanese Medical Disclaimer, provided for reference. The Japanese Medical Disclaimer is the governing document; in the event of any discrepancy between the two, the Japanese version controls. The Japanese source is also still in draft form pending final legal review, so this translation may change without notice as that review concludes.

maru Medical Disclaimer

1. Medical Disclaimer (Full Text)

1.1 maru Is Not a Medical Device

maru is an information application that visualizes your own health data (CGM readings, heart rate, sleep, meals, body composition, and more) to help you understand yourself.

maru is not a medical device (including a "programmed medical device" under Japan's Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Act).

The information, analysis, and AI-generated responses that maru provides are never intended for use in diagnosis, treatment, or prevention.

1.2 Not Medical Advice

The information maru displays and the responses its AI generates are intended to supplement general health information and do not substitute for medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment by a physician, pharmacist, registered dietitian, or other healthcare professional.

In particular, the following are beyond the intended use of maru, and you should always consult a healthcare professional:

  • Starting, stopping, or changing medication
  • Changing a treatment plan
  • Self-diagnosing or self-treating an existing condition
  • Responding to an allergic reaction
  • Dietary decisions during pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Health decisions for children, especially infants

1.3 If Something Feels Wrong

  • If you notice anything unusual about your condition, seek medical care promptly.
  • In an emergency (loss of consciousness, severe chest pain, a hypoglycemic episode, etc.), do not use maru — contact emergency medical services immediately (in Japan, dial 119).
  • maru has no emergency-call or life-saving function.

1.4 Handling of CGM Data

maru displays data obtained from your CGM (continuous glucose monitor), but the accuracy of that data is subject to the warranty scope of your CGM's manufacturer. For medical decisions about glucose management, always also use blood glucose values measured separately at a medical institution.

1.5 If You Have an Existing Medical Condition

If you have diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, thyroid disease, an eating disorder, or another existing condition, we recommend consulting your physician before using the Service. If using the Service conflicts with your physician's guidance, always follow your physician's guidance.

1.5.1 Additional Guidance for Users With Serious Chronic Conditions

This section is an interim disclaimer addressing the possibility that some people invited during pre-registration may be living with serious diabetes.

If your glucose control is unstable, or if any of the following apply to you, please consult your physician before you begin using maru:

  • Your HbA1c is 7.0% or higher, or you have had sustained blood glucose readings of 250 mg/dL or higher
  • You are on insulin therapy
  • You have experienced a severe hypoglycemic episode (with loss of consciousness) within the past year
  • You are being treated for a diabetes complication (retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, foot disease, etc.)
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding and require diabetes management

If you fall into one of these groups and use maru, please share and confirm the following points with your physician:

  1. Interpretation of CGM data should follow your physician's judgment, not maru's
  2. Adjustments to diet, exercise, or medication should always be made in consultation with your physician
  3. Any response from the in-app AI chat to a question about medication or treatment decisions is general information, not medical advice (see §1.6 / §4)
  4. If you notice abnormal values or feel unwell, contact a medical institution, not maru

1.5.2 Additional Emergency Guidance (For Users With Serious Conditions)

If any of the following symptoms occur, stop using maru and contact a medical institution immediately:

  • Confusion, fainting, or seizures (possible severe hypoglycemia)
  • Intense thirst, frequent urination, or acetone breath odor (possible diabetic ketoacidosis)
  • Sudden vision loss, severe chest pain, or difficulty breathing (possible acute worsening of a complication)

Emergency contacts:

  • Emergency medical services: 119 (in Japan; for cardiac arrest, loss of consciousness, etc.)
  • Your regular physician (your usual point of contact)
  • Night/holiday emergency clinics (a regional resource)

1.6 About AI Responses

maru provides a response feature that uses generative AI (such as Anthropic Claude and OpenAI GPT). Please understand that AI responses have the following characteristics:

  • AI responses may contain errors, inaccurate information, or outdated information
  • AI does not have full knowledge of your individual medical situation, medical history, or medication regimen
  • AI does not assess urgency or perform triage
  • Even where the AI makes a specific suggestion, such as "try doing X" or "avoid Y," that suggestion is not a prescription or instruction from a physician

When referring to an AI response, the final decision should be made by you and, where appropriate, a healthcare professional.

1.7 Principle of Self-Responsibility

Use of maru is entirely at the User's own responsibility. For changes in health status or damages arising from use of the Service, we bear no liability beyond the scope of Terms of Service §8 (Disclaimers).

2. Short-Form Versions (For In-App Display)

⚠️ AI responses are not medical advice. Always consult a physician for diagnosis or treatment decisions.

2.2 On Completing a CGM Connection (Modal)

3. Prohibited and Recommended Wording (Operational Guide)

Applies across the app UI, landing pages, social posts, and AI prompt design, to stay clear of lines drawn by the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Act, the Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations, and the Health Promotion Act.

4. Constraints Built Into the AI Chat's System Prompt

Consistent with docs/L4_intelligence/ai_safety_compliance.md. This section summarizes how the medical-disclaimer wording guidance is reflected in AI responses.

- The AI does not make judgments or suggestions about a user's medication decisions or changes to a treatment plan
- The AI always encourages prioritizing the guidance of a physician or other healthcare professional
- When an abnormal value or possible urgency is suspected, the AI promptly suggests "consult a physician" or "contact emergency services"
- The AI avoids specific, individually directed statements like "you should do X," and instead stays within data-based observations, such as "generally speaking, X is said to be the case" or "your data shows a tendency toward X"
- The AI discloses, when relevant, that it is an AI and not a physician
